Bill was a sports columnist for the Providence Journal for nearly 40 years. He was also the author of numerous award-winning books, including Fall River Dreams, Glory Days, and Hope: A School, a Team, a Dream.
Bill grew up in Barrington, where he attended Barrington High School and was a star player on the basketball team. He went on to attend Worcester Academy and then Brown University. There, he was co-captain of the basketball team and later was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2021, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Speaking of his early career at the Journal, Bill said “The Journal was going to pay me to go to games and write about sports? Really? Can you sign me up twice?”
